Ideally, I have nothing in mind when I start, no sketch, no structure, no vision. Each colour, each brush is chosen intuitively. The surface of the white canvas itself gives the direction, shows me the centre, the zero point. For this heart of the later painting I use a warm hue like yellow or orange and only a small quantity of paint is applied, allowing the light of the canvas to shine through this first thin layer. While concentrating on areas where the brush easily strokes, I create shadows and add other colours. With each layer the form becomes clearer, gently curving outlines are revealed, almost organic shapes that I seem to have touched before – somewhere along my way.
All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness.
